Day One: St. Clair to Port Austin
Leaving St. Clair, the road immediately begins delivering what makes this trip special. M-29 follows the St. Clair River north toward Lake Huron, weaving through communities that still maintain their maritime heritage.
Marine City offers a pleasant place to begin the adventure. Freighters often pass close enough to appreciate their enormous size, and the downtown district provides opportunities to stretch your legs before continuing north.
As M-25 hugs the shoreline, Lexington appears with its charming harbor, boutique shops, and waterfront parks. It is the kind of town where an intended thirty-minute stop often becomes an afternoon.
For lunch, consider dining at one of Lexington’s waterfront restaurants where outdoor seating allows views of boats entering and leaving the harbor. Fresh perch and whitefish frequently appear on local menus and provide a true taste of the region.
Further north, Port Sanilac and Harbor Beach offer additional reasons to slow down. Harbor Beach boasts one of the largest man-made freshwater harbors in the world, and its lighthouse serves as an iconic Lake Huron landmark.
As the afternoon unfolds, continue toward Port Austin at the tip of Michigan’s Thumb. The landscape changes dramatically here. Rocky shorelines replace sandy beaches, and Lake Huron stretches endlessly toward the horizon.
Before settling in for the evening, visit Port Austin Harbor and explore the shoreline. If time allows, a kayak excursion to Turnip Rock reveals one of Michigan’s most photographed natural formations.
Dinner in Port Austin should include locally sourced seafood whenever available. The combination of a waterfront meal and a Lake Huron sunset creates the perfect ending to the first day.
Day Two: Port Austin to Alpena
Morning arrives with the sound of waves and the promise of another spectacular day on the road.
Leaving Port Austin, M-25 wraps around Saginaw Bay through communities that many travelers never experience. Caseville is often known for its summer festivities, but its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere make it worth visiting throughout the season.
A stop at Caseville County Park offers expansive water views and a peaceful setting for a morning walk.
As the shoreline curves northward, the route passes through Bay Port and Au Gres before reaching East Tawas and Tawas City.
This stretch may be one of the most underrated sections of Michigan’s coastline. The towns are welcoming, the beaches are beautiful, and the pace feels refreshingly unhurried.
Tawas City makes an excellent lunch stop. Waterfront dining options provide views across Tawas Bay, while nearby Tawas Point State Park offers opportunities to visit another historic lighthouse and enjoy a stroll along the beach.
From Tawas, US-23 begins what many consider the crown jewel of Michigan’s Sunrise Coast.
Oscoda introduces travelers to vast stretches of shoreline and scenic overlooks. Nearby, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse stands as one of the most picturesque lighthouse settings in the state.
Continuing north, the road passes through Harrisville before arriving in Alpena.
Alpena combines natural beauty with maritime history. The city’s waterfront district is ideal for an evening walk, while the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center provides fascinating insight into the shipwrecks resting beneath Lake Huron’s surface.
Dinner in Alpena should not be rushed. Whether enjoying fresh Great Lakes fish, locally sourced steaks, or waterfront dining overlooking Thunder Bay, this community rewards travelers who take the time to stay awhile.
Day Three: Alpena to Mackinaw City
If the first two days build anticipation, the final day delivers a grand finale.
North of Alpena, US-23 continues tracing the shoreline through some of the most scenic stretches of northeastern Michigan.
The Presque Isle region deserves special attention. Here, travelers can explore both the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse and the New Presque Isle Lighthouse. Climbing the historic tower rewards visitors with panoramic views that seem to stretch forever across Lake Huron.
Farther north, 40 Mile Point Lighthouse provides another memorable stop where visitors can walk the shoreline and discover remnants of a historic shipwreck.
Rogers City offers a welcoming downtown and an opportunity to enjoy lunch overlooking the water. Local restaurants frequently feature whitefish harvested from Lake Huron, making it one of the best places on the route to experience fresh Great Lakes cuisine.
As the route approaches Cheboygan, the landscape transitions once again. Forests, rivers, and shoreline vistas combine to create a fitting conclusion to the adventure.
Before reaching Mackinaw City, consider a short detour to Ocqueoc Falls. As the Lower Peninsula’s largest waterfall, it provides a surprising and beautiful contrast to the coastal scenery experienced throughout the trip.
Finally, Mackinaw City appears on the horizon.
The first glimpse of the Mackinac Bridge never gets old.
Standing along the shoreline with Lake Huron behind you and the Mighty Mac stretching across the Straits of Mackinac ahead, it becomes clear why this route is more than simply a drive. It is a journey through Michigan’s maritime history, natural beauty, and small-town charm.
Why Three Days Is Better Than One
Could this trip be completed in a single day?
Certainly.
Should it be?
Probably not.
The real magic of Michigan’s Lake Huron shoreline isn’t found in checking destinations off a list. It is found in unexpected conversations at local diners, lingering over lunch beside a harbor, climbing lighthouse towers, watching freighters pass in the distance, and discovering places you never planned to visit.
Three days provides enough time to appreciate the journey rather than simply endure the miles.
