Welcome to the Cooper Shortcut Camping Journey
Some of my most cherished memories begin on the road—with my Grandma Alice Cooper.
She wasn’t what you’d call a conventional traveler. At times, she sat on a stack of phone books just to see over the dashboard. But what she lacked in height, she more than made up for in spirit. To us kids, she was larger than life—no rock star, despite what our imaginations suggested—just a woman who believed the road itself was worth the trip.
Grandma had a phrase she used whenever the map didn’t quite agree with reality:
“We’re not lost—we’re taking a Cooper Shortcut.”
To her, travel was never just about arriving. It was about the moments in between—the wrong turns, the quiet back roads, the unexpected stops that turned into the best stories. That mindset shaped how I see travel, adventure, and life itself.
Over the past 50 years, my wife Vicky and I have carried that same spirit forward. We’ve camped our way through life—starting with tents, then trailers, and now traveling the country in our 45-foot toy hauler that truly feels like home. Along the way, our journeys have grown and changed with our family, seasons of life, and the dreams that kept calling us back to the road.
Now in retirement, we’re still chasing horizons—sunrise to sunset—often choosing the road less traveled, just as Grandma taught us.
