It was during one of those chilly but cheerful holiday seasons some years ago that Grandma Cooper decided to spend her winter break at my brother Tom’s house. Tom, always the host with the most, had prepared everything to perfection, ensuring Grandma had all the comforts of home during her stay. He had even set up a cozy bedroom for her, complete with an ensuite for that extra touch of privacy and convenience.

One brisk morning, as the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg wafted through the house, Tom thought he’d check in on Grandma to make sure she had everything she needed for her morning routine. With a fresh towel and washcloth in hand, he strolled down the hallway to her room. The festive sounds of holiday music lightly played in the background, blending with the occasional laughter and chatter from other family members who were starting to stir.

Tom gently knocked on Grandma’s door, not wanting to startle her. A few moments passed before the door creaked open, and there stood Grandma Cooper, her face lighting up with a warm, welcoming smile.

“Here’s a towel and washcloth, Grandma,” Tom said, handing over the items with a smile.

Grandma looked at the towel and then at the washcloth, a mischievous twinkle appearing in her eyes. With a chuckle, she replied, “I don’t need the towel, the washcloth will do. I prefer to air dry.”

Tom burst out laughing, shaking his head in amusement. Grandma Cooper’s preference for air drying was just one of the many quirks that made her the unique and cherished family member she was. Her independence and spirited character always brought a light-heartedness to any family gathering, and this holiday was no exception.

For the rest of her stay, the family would tease her gently about her minimalist drying techniques, and Grandma would just wink and smile, always ready with a witty comeback. It wasn’t just her preference to air dry that left an impression; it was her vibrant spirit and her ability to make everyone feel deeply at home, even when she was a guest in their house.

That holiday season, filled with laughter, good food, and the warmth of family, was one of the most memorable. Grandma Cooper’s visit, marked by her light-hearted approach to life and her love for her family, reminded everyone what the holidays were truly about—joy, simplicity, and the comfort of being surrounded by loved ones. And, of course, the freedom to air dry!
