Every RVer has that one traveling companion who makes every stop a little more memorable. For us, that companion isn’t another person—it’s Cash, our little Poochon with a personality much bigger than his size.
Cash has traveled thousands of miles with us through dozens of states, countless campgrounds, scenic backroads, and more fuel stops than he could ever count. While he may not help with hitching the fifth wheel or backing into a campsite, he certainly keeps us smiling every single day.
Sometimes Vicky and I laugh and wonder what he must be thinking as he watches the world pass by through the windshield. If Cash could talk, we’re convinced he’d have quite a story to tell.
Meet Cash, Our Four-Legged RV Traveler
Cash is a Poochon—a playful mix of a Bichon Frise and Toy Poodle. At just a few years old, he’s already become a seasoned traveler.
His favorite seat isn’t on the couch or in our lap while we’re rolling down the highway. It’s perched proudly in his custom console seat between us, where he has the perfect view of everything happening outside.
Most of the miles are spent curled into a little ball, sleeping peacefully.
At least…that’s what it looks like.
The moment the truck begins slowing down, one eye opens.
A second later, both ears stand at attention.
He somehow knows before we do that another adventure is about to begin.
Fuel Stops Mean New Smells
Most people see a fuel stop as another interruption in the day’s drive.
Cash sees opportunity.
As soon as the truck comes to a stop, his excitement builds. Once the door opens, his little legs hit the ground and his nose immediately goes to work.
Every gas station…
Every rest area…
Every travel center…
Each one has a completely different collection of smells to investigate.
He zigzags from one interesting scent to the next as if he’s reading the daily newspaper.
To us it’s just another parking lot.
To Cash, it’s breaking news.
His Favorite Stop Is the Campground
Nothing compares to arriving at camp.
While we’re leveling the RV, connecting utilities, and extending the slides, Cash waits patiently outside beside us. His tail rarely stops wagging because he knows exactly what comes next.
The instant the RV door opens and the stairs fold down, he launches inside.
His first mission?
Inspect everything.
He races from room to room as if making sure nobody moved the furniture during the drive.
Only after the inspection is complete does he jump onto the sofa, stretch out, and patiently wait for his favorite reward—an ear rub.
Once those ears receive the proper amount of attention, he usually lets out one satisfied bark.
That’s his way of saying,
“Okay…I’m ready to check out the neighborhood.”
Two Words That Change Everything
Cash has an impressive vocabulary.
Well…
Maybe not vocabulary.
More like two words.
Walk.
Ride.
Mention either one—even in casual conversation—and he instantly appears under your feet.
If Vicky simply says, “Want to go for a walk?” he’s already standing by the door before the sentence is finished.
The same goes for golf cart rides.
Those afternoon cruises through the campground have become one of his favorite daily routines. As the breeze blows through his curly fur, he watches children riding bicycles, fellow campers waving hello, squirrels racing up trees, and the occasional rabbit darting across the road.
By evening, we’re usually out for one more slow ride as the campground settles into the peaceful rhythm that makes RV life so enjoyable.
Needless to say, we’ve learned to spell certain words instead of saying them out loud.
The Professional Napper
Traveling can be exhausting.
Just ask Cash.
He has perfected the art of sleeping in just about every imaginable position.
Curled into a tight little ball.
Stretched completely across the couch.
Flat on his back with all four paws pointing toward the ceiling.

Sometimes we honestly wonder if that’s comfortable.
Apparently, it is.
One minute he’s watching every movement around the campsite.
The next, he’s sound asleep without a care in the world.
His naps have become such a familiar sight that we often find ourselves reaching for the camera before waking him.
Those are some of our favorite memories because they capture exactly who Cash is—completely relaxed, completely trusting, and perfectly content wherever “home” happens to be parked.
Evening Means Family Time
As daylight fades, Cash naturally finds his place between us on the sofa.
No invitation needed.
He curls up close, rests his head against one of us, and quietly enjoys the evening.
Unless, of course, we’re sitting around a campfire.
Then bedtime can wait.
He seems just as fascinated by dancing flames as we are.
Eventually, though, his internal clock wins.
Without warning, he disappears into the bedroom, hops onto the bed, circles a few times, and settles in for the night long before we do.
It’s his polite way of saying,
“I’ll save your spot.”
One Last Walk Before Bed
Before turning in, Cash always makes one final trip outside.
Unlike the earlier walks, this one isn’t about exploring.
Business comes first.
Then it’s a quick trot back toward the RV.
Once inside, he bounds onto the bed, turns a few circles to find the perfect position, and waits for the finishing touch—a small blanket tucked gently over him.
Within minutes, he’s asleep.
Meanwhile, Vicky and I quietly reflect on another wonderful day spent together.
Three travelers.
One home on wheels.
Countless memories still waiting somewhere down the road.
Why Traveling With Cash Has Made RV Life Better
People often ask if traveling with a dog makes RV life more difficult.
Sometimes it does.
You plan a few extra stops.
You think about pet-friendly campgrounds.
You schedule your days a little differently.
But what you receive in return is immeasurable.
Cash reminds us to slow down.
To enjoy the simple things.
To appreciate every new place as if we’re seeing it for the very first time.
His excitement over a short walk, a golf cart ride, or a new campground has a way of reminding us why we started this journey in the first place.
The destinations are wonderful.
But it’s sharing them together that makes them unforgettable.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve ever traveled with a dog, you already understand. They don’t care whether you’re parked beside a mountain lake, tucked into a quiet forest campground, or spending the night at a roadside RV park. As long as they’re with the people they love, they’re home.
Cash has become much more than our camping companion. He’s part of every sunrise, every scenic drive, every campground walk, and every memory we’ve made on the road.
One day these adventures will simply become stories we tell around the table.
Thankfully, we’ll always have the photographs—and plenty of smiles—to remind us that life really is better when your best friend has four paws.
Happy travels,
The Cooper Shortcut Camping Journey Trio 😊 PlusOne!
