Does your RV start to feel a little stuffy after being parked for a while? If you’re noticing that musty smell that just doesn’t seem to go away, it might be time to take action. Maintaining a fresh and pleasant atmosphere in your RV isn’t just about comfort—it’s also about enjoying your travels without any unpleasant odors. Here’s how you can keep your RV smelling fresh with some easy and effective tips.

Banishing Moisture: The Key to a Mold-Free RV

One of the biggest challenges with maintaining an RV is controlling the humidity and moisture inside, especially when it’s stored away. Excess moisture can lead to mold and mildew, which not only damage the interior but also produce that notorious musty smell.

A practical solution is using a dehumidifier. There are different types, such as plug-in units or standalone moisture absorbers. These devices work by pulling water vapor from the air and storing it until you can dispose of it. For instance, while storing our RV in Michigan, we used DampRid containers to great effect. They needed to be emptied every few weeks, and setting them in a bucket prevented any overflow mishaps.

However, if you still notice a persistent musty smell, it could indicate a more severe issue like a water leak. In such cases, it’s best to consult a professional to check for any potential damage.

Aiming for No Smell

Interestingly, the best scent for an RV might be no scent at all. Check areas that can harbor odors such as waste baskets, litter boxes, and drainages. Recently, I found a moldy smell emanating from a sink that hadn’t been used in a while. Pouring bleach down the drain and thoroughly cleaning it solved the problem.

Shower tracks are another unexpected source of odor. To prevent mold buildup, regularly rinse these areas. If mold has already formed, spraying a mold killer and using a toothbrush to scrub the tracks can effectively remove the mold.

Utilizing Charcoal Purifiers

Charcoal purifiers are excellent for small spaces like RVs. These come in bags or small containers that you can place in various locations such as closets, near pet areas, or in bathrooms. Charcoal has natural odor-absorbing properties, making it perfect for neutralizing smells without adding any scent.

Choosing the Right Air Fresheners

While it’s tempting to use scented air fresheners, remember that RVs are compact, and strong fragrances can be overwhelming. Opt for milder scents or those that are diffused gradually. I personally prefer using Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day products, which use essential oils to provide a fresh, light scent that doesn’t overpower the small space of an RV.

Essential Oils for a Subtle Scent

Speaking of essential oils, they are a fantastic way to add a pleasant aroma to your RV. You can find a variety of scents, so experiment to see which you like best. For instance, peppermint oil is not only refreshing but also deters mice—just be sure to use it sparingly!

Don’t Forget the Vents

Proper ventilation is crucial in maintaining a fresh-smelling RV. Make use of ceiling and stove vents to expel cooking smells and reduce humidity. It’s particularly advisable to run the bathroom fan during showers to prevent moisture buildup.

Dealing with Musty Towels

Towels in RVs can easily become musty due to the confined space and lack of airflow. To combat this, avoid using fabric softeners, which can leave a residue that traps moisture. Instead, wash your towels with white vinegar and baking soda. This not only removes odors but also keeps the towels fresh. Remember to dry them promptly after washing—either in the sun or a dryer without fabric softener sheets.

Final Thoughts

Keeping your RV fresh and pleasant is all about regular maintenance and being proactive with moisture and odor control. With these simple tips, you can ensure that your RV remains a welcoming space for all your adventures. Remember, a fresh RV is just as important as a well-maintained one, so take the time to care for it, and you’ll enjoy every mile of your journey!
