Michigan’s Most Beautiful Campgrounds (and the Memories They Make)
So last week, I shared that the Pure Michigan website identified 10 of the Most Beautiful Campgrounds in Michigan — and honestly, it’s a solid list. According to the site: “Michigan is the perfect place for an idyllic camping trip! Escape the hustle and bustle, spend quality time with friends and family, and develop a newfound appreciation for Mother Nature at some of these most scenic campgrounds in Michigan.”
Sounds perfect, right? Well… Porcupine Mountains State Park in Ontonagon was initially missing from that list. I actually wrote a whole piece last week about why it’s one of our personal favorites. And wouldn’t you know it — this week it’s back on the Pure Michigan list. Say what!? (Yes, it was on the list last week, but I wanted to single it out.)
We’ve enjoyed all of these stunning Michigan campgrounds over the years, but Porcupine Mountains has a special place in our hearts. Years ago, while camping there, we took a crisp early-morning motorcycle ride through the forest. As we rounded a quiet bend, three deer stood motionless in the middle of the road. The nearest one stared right at us as we eased to a stop, our hearts pounding. The deer stepped calmly across the center line, just as we stopped exactly where it had stood. We could’ve reached out and touched it. It gave a short snort and disappeared into the trees. We talk about that moment every time we head back to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula — it’s just one of those memories you never forget.
But enough reminiscing — let’s dive into the full list. Here are Michigan’s 10 Most Beautiful Campgrounds, according to Pure Michigan, complete with what to do, where to eat, and why they’re so special.
