From Michigan to Texas in an RV—The Journey Was the Destination
Every RV trip begins with a destination in mind, but after more than 50 years of camping, we’ve learned that the most memorable moments rarely happen where you planned.
Sometimes they’re found over breakfast at a Cracker Barrel after a long day behind the wheel. Other times they’re discovered while watching the sunrise over a quiet lake, meeting fellow travelers who quickly become friends, or dealing with a flat tire that suddenly changes your plans.
Our latest adventure carried us from Michigan through the Southeast, along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, across the Gulf Coast, and deep into Texas before eventually winding our way back home. Along the way, we experienced luxurious RV resorts, world-famous motorcycle rallies, breathtaking scenery, incredible hospitality, and a few reminders that flexibility is one of an RVer’s greatest assets.

Leaving Michigan Behind
There is something exciting about pulling out of the driveway knowing home will soon disappear in the rearview mirror.
Our 2024 Rogue Armored fifth-wheel was loaded, the truck was ready, and anticipation filled the cab as we pointed the nose south.
Rather than pushing ourselves too hard on the first day, we followed one of our favorite travel strategies—drive a comfortable distance and enjoy the journey.
That evening we settled into a Cracker Barrel parking lot in Virginia.
Over the years we’ve found select Cracker Barrel locations to be dependable overnight stops when traveling respectfully. After enjoying a hearty dinner, we settled in for the night knowing a hot breakfast was only a short walk away the next morning.
Sometimes simple travel days become the most relaxing.
A Hidden Gem in North Carolina
The Lakes RV & Cabin Resort
The first campground that truly captured our attention was The Lakes RV & Cabin Resort in North Carolina.
Situated around three beautiful lakes—Misty Morning Lake, Cypress Lake, and White Oak Lake—the property immediately felt peaceful.
Our large fifth-wheel fit comfortably on the spacious site, something every big-rig owner appreciates.
Morning walks around the lakes quickly became a favorite routine. The water reflected the early sunlight while birds greeted another Carolina sunrise.
The resort struck an ideal balance between natural beauty and modern conveniences.
Clean facilities…
Well-maintained roads…
Room to breathe…
Sometimes luxury isn’t measured by elaborate amenities. Sometimes it’s simply having enough space to relax and enjoy God’s creation.
This quickly became one of those campgrounds we’d gladly return to.
Florida Delivered Two Very Different Experiences
Sugar Mill Ruins Travel Park
Not every campground becomes a favorite.
We arrived at Sugar Mill Ruins Travel Park near New Smyrna Beach well after dark.
Finding an unfamiliar campsite in daylight can already be challenging.
Finding one at night without clearly marked sites is another story entirely.
Thankfully, a maintenance employee arrived in a UTV and patiently guided us into our site. His kindness turned what could have been a miserable evening into one we could laugh about later.
The next morning revealed a campground still recovering from Hurricane Milton. While we certainly understood the challenges they faced, we also discovered a boil-water advisory that hadn’t been mentioned before our arrival.
The dense tropical vegetation created plenty of privacy, but the campground simply wasn’t the right fit for us.
Every campground teaches you something.
Sometimes it’s where you want to return.
Sometimes it’s where you appreciate the next stop even more.
Daytona Bike Week Never Disappoints
If you’ve never experienced Daytona Bike Week, imagine an entire city celebrating motorcycles.
Main Street comes alive with thousands of riders, custom bikes, live music, vendors, food, and conversations that begin with complete strangers and end with handshakes.
Whether someone rode in on a vintage Harley-Davidson or a brand-new touring motorcycle, everyone shared the same passion.
Even after all these years, there is still something special about hearing hundreds of motorcycles rumble down Main Street together.
It’s difficult to explain.
You simply have to experience it.
West Toward Texas
Leaving Florida, we continued west along the Gulf Coast.
Pensacola RV Park
Our overnight stay at Pensacola RV Park became one of those pleasant surprises that travelers remember.
Family-owned.
Quiet.
Friendly.
Immaculately maintained.
We wished we had planned an extra day.
Those are often the best compliments you can give any campground.
Reel Chill RV Resort – Rockport, Texas
Rockport welcomed us with warm coastal breezes and a beautifully maintained RV resort.
Reel Chill RV Resort served as our home while spending time with family, and it proved to be an outstanding place to unwind.
Wide sites.
Excellent amenities.
Relaxed atmosphere.
After several days on the road, it felt wonderful to slow down.
Buda Place RV Resort
Our next stop raised the bar once again.
Buda Place RV Resort impressed us from the moment we arrived.
Beautiful lakes.
Walking trails.
Resort-style amenities.
Dog parks.
Hot tubs.
Large pull-through sites.
It was easy to understand why so many guests extend their stays.
This wasn’t simply an overnight stop.
It was a destination.
Galveston Was the Perfect Finale
Jamaica Beach RV Resort
Some campgrounds make you immediately wonder what it would be like to own a seasonal site.
Jamaica Beach RV Resort was one of those places.
The lazy river.
Mini golf.
Beautiful landscaping.
Excellent facilities.
Its location just minutes from the Gulf made exploring Galveston effortless.
I remember telling Vicky,
“I think I could live here.”
She smiled.
I think she agreed.
The Lone Star Rally
Galveston during the Lone Star Rally has an energy unlike anywhere else.
Motorcycles filled the streets.
Music echoed through downtown.
Restaurants overflowed with visitors.
The Gulf breeze carried that unmistakable feeling that something exciting was happening around every corner.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, it ranks among the premier rallies in the country.
For everyone else, it’s simply fun to watch.
Murphy’s Law Came Along for the Ride Home
Every long RV trip eventually provides a story you weren’t expecting.
Ours began on the Galveston Causeway.
A flat tire.
Thankfully, roadside assistance quickly connected us with ACE of Galveston, whose prompt service had us safely rolling again.
Unfortunately, our tire troubles weren’t finished.
Country Tire Center in Leggett, Texas repaired one tire before we continued toward Arkansas.
That evening we overnighted at a Love’s Travel Stop where fellow RVers immediately introduced themselves and shared stories from their own travels.
It’s amazing how quickly strangers become neighbors in the RV community.
The following morning brought another surprise.
This time the trailer tire was flat.
Rain only made the situation more interesting.
Fortunately, the team at Bypass Diesel & Wrecker Service responded quickly, replaced the damaged tire, and sent us safely on our way.
Delays are frustrating.
Good people make them manageable.
Finally Back in Michigan
One final overnight stop.
One last breakfast on the road.
Then the familiar sights of home.
We arrived one day later than planned, but schedules have never been the reason we travel.
The memories are.
Looking back, we didn’t remember the extra day.
We remembered the peaceful lakes in North Carolina.
The excitement of Daytona.
Texas hospitality.
Galveston’s beaches.
Helpful mechanics.
Friendly RVers.
And another reminder that every trip has a story worth telling.
If everything always went according to plan, there probably wouldn’t be much to write about.
