There’s something unforgettable about the moment Gatlinburg first comes into view. The mountains rise around you like old friends, the air feels a little fresher, and the promise of adventure seems to hang in the mist. For many travelers, Gatlinburg is more than just a destination—it is the front porch to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in America, welcoming millions of visitors every year.

For those of us who love the open road, whether arriving by RV, truck, or motorcycle, Gatlinburg has that rare blend of mountain-town charm, family fun, and natural beauty that keeps calling us back.

Why Visit Gatlinburg?

Gatlinburg truly earns its reputation as the Gateway to the Smokies. Sitting right at the entrance to the national park, it gives you immediate access to mountain overlooks, waterfalls, scenic drives, and hiking trails, while also offering a lively downtown filled with restaurants, shops, and attractions.

This is what makes it special: you can spend the morning watching sunrise over the mountains and the evening strolling the Parkway with an ice cream cone in hand.

The area is known for:

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Gatlinburg SkyLift and SkyBridge
  • Anakeesta
  • Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies
  • Scenic drives and wildlife viewing
  • Mountain dining and Southern comfort food

For first-time visitors, it offers just the right balance between wilderness and convenience.

Are There Any Campgrounds Nearby?

Absolutely—and this is where Gatlinburg really shines for the RV and camping crowd.

Several excellent campgrounds are close to downtown and the national park entrance.

Popular nearby options include:

  • Smoky Bear Campground & RV Park
  • Greenbrier Campground
  • Twin Creek RV Resort, located just minutes from downtown
  • KOA Holiday near Gatlinburg / Cosby

If you enjoy being close to the action, Twin Creek is a wonderful choice.

If you prefer more peaceful riverside camping with mountain scenery, Greenbrier is hard to beat.

For the Cooper Shortcut style of travel, I would recommend staying just outside the downtown core so you get mountain serenity at night while remaining close enough to explore the town during the day.

What Is There to Do While in the Area?

This is where Gatlinburg becomes more than just a stop—it becomes an experience.

Start with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park itself. With over 800 miles of hiking trails, scenic drives, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, it is the heart of the trip.

Popular must-do experiences include:

Take the Scenic Drive

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is one of the most beautiful drives in the Smokies.

Morning fog rolling through the trees makes it feel almost magical.

Ride Up to the SkyBridge

The Gatlinburg SkyLift offers panoramic mountain views and leads to the famous SkyBridge, one of the most iconic experiences in town.

Visit Anakeesta

Anakeesta blends mountain beauty with elevated walkways, gardens, chairlifts, and family-friendly adventure.

Explore Downtown

The Parkway is packed with:

  • unique shops
  • candy stores
  • moonshine tastings
  • mountain crafts
  • family attractions

Visit the Aquarium

Ripley’s Aquarium is consistently one of the most highly rated attractions in Gatlinburg.

For families, it is a must.

Where Should We Be Sure to Eat Lunch or Dinner?

Now we’re talking one of my favorite travel topics.

Gatlinburg offers wonderful mountain comfort food and Southern favorites.

For lunch, Pancake Pantry is legendary, even if breakfast is served all day.

For dinner, a few standouts include:

The Park Grill

A classic mountain lodge feel with hearty meals and wonderful atmosphere.

Smoky Mountain Trout House

Fresh mountain trout is practically a rite of passage in Gatlinburg.

The Peddler Steakhouse

A longtime favorite with Smoky Mountain views and excellent steaks.

Cliff Top Restaurant

Beautiful views and a memorable dining experience.

If I had to recommend one memorable dinner spot, it would be somewhere with mountain views at sunset.

That’s the kind of meal that stays with you.

Best Time to Visit

Fall is absolutely spectacular.

October brings fiery color across the mountains and is one of the most searched travel times for the region.

Spring is another wonderful choice with wildflowers and smaller crowds.
