Many years ago—five decades, to be exact—North Carolina was home. For us, it’s a place of layered memories: some sweet, some bittersweet, all woven into the fabric of who we are. Over the years, we’ve watched three sons, a daughter-in-law, and grandchildren live or serve in North Carolina, giving us plenty of reasons to return often. And honestly, when it comes to camping and riding our Harleys, North Carolina is tough to beat. Even though we no longer live there (hint, hint), it still feels like home.

It’s that magnetic pull that brings us back time and again. Each visit feels like revisiting a chapter of an old, cherished book — familiar and yet full of new details you missed the first time around. So come along as I share the cities that have etched themselves into our hearts, the kind of places where every twist in the road holds a story, and every stopover leaves you wanting just a little more.

Asheville Blue Ridge Parkway

Our journey usually begins in Asheville, where the cool mountain air greets you like an old friend and the Blue Ridge Parkway invites you to lean into its curves, throttle open, feeling that unmistakable Harley hum. Asheville is more than a destination — it’s a mood. The River Arts District bustles with creative energy, artists brushing bold colors onto canvas in former industrial warehouses. It’s the kind of place where you wander into a café for coffee and emerge an hour later, heart warmed by conversation with a stranger. We once spent a misty morning at the Biltmore, wandering those grand halls and imagining the parties and stories they’d seen. That night, parked at Lake Powhatan Campground, I watched the flames dance in the firepit and felt grateful for how the mountains have a way of making the noise of everyday life fall away.

Raliegh Skyline

From the mountains, we wind eastward to Raleigh, a city that blends its past and present with effortless charm. Raleigh is where you stroll under the oaks that line its downtown streets, stumble upon pop-up markets, or hear the strains of live music spilling from an open doorway. We’ve wandered the halls of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences with wide-eyed grandkids tugging us from dinosaur skeletons to butterfly houses, then meandered over to Pullen Park, where carousel horses spin just as they did when I was young. One visit, after a long Harley ride along the greenway trails, we tucked into a booth at The Pit, savoring slow-smoked barbecue and hushpuppies that tasted like pure Southern comfort. Raleigh may be the capital, but it has a way of wrapping you in a small-town embrace.

Wilmington Riverfront

The call of the coast soon pulls us southeast, toward Wilmington. There’s something about this port city — maybe it’s the way the sunlight shimmers on the Cape Fear River, or how history seems to whisper from the brick facades along the Riverwalk. We’ve watched the sun sink behind the USS North Carolina battleship, its silhouette a silent sentinel to the past, and shared fried shrimp baskets at Dockside with the salt air tousling our hair. Riding the Harley down Highway 421 toward Fort Fisher, the Atlantic glinting at every turn, there’s a rush of freedom that only a coastal ride can bring. And when the day’s done, Carolina Beach State Park offers the perfect resting spot, the sound of the waves a lullaby just beyond the dunes.

Charlotte is the home of NASCAR

Not far inland lies Charlotte, a city that surprised us in the best way. It’s sleek and modern, yet the people here smile like they’ve known you forever. We’ve spent afternoons wandering the NASCAR Hall of Fame, soaking in the speedway stories, and evenings on the patio of Midwood Smokehouse, where the smell of ribs on the smoker drifts down the block like a promise. One autumn, we camped at McDowell Nature Preserve, watching the leaves turn gold along Lake Wylie’s edge, and rode out to Crowders Mountain, where the roads twist just enough to keep you grinning under your helmet. Charlotte feels like a place where ambition and hospitality sit side by side — where skyscrapers touch the clouds, but the folks at the coffee shop still ask how your mama’s doing.

Boone Mountains

As the road climbs again, we find ourselves in Boone and Blowing Rock, nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. There’s magic here — maybe it’s the mist that curls along the ridges at sunrise, or the way the valleys open up when you crest a hill, leaving you breathless every time. We’ve walked hand in hand across the Mile-High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain, laughing nervously as the wind teased at our jackets, and sipped cider on a chilly afternoon in Blowing Rock’s storybook village square. Riding the Parkway between these towns is like riding through a painting, every overlook a brushstroke of color and light. Nights at Julian Price Campground feel timeless, the crackle of a campfire and the hush of the woods reminding you how little you need to be happy.

Outer Banks Lighthouse

And then, of course, there’s the Outer Banks — a place that feels like the edge of the world. The first time we rode Highway 12, with the ocean on one side and Pamlico Sound on the other, it felt like we were balancing on a tightrope of sand and sky. The Outer Banks are a wild, windswept kind of beautiful, where lighthouses stand as steadfast guardians and wild horses roam the dunes of Corolla. We’ve climbed the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, tasted flaky biscuits at a tiny bakery on Ocracoke Island, and fallen asleep in a tent at Frisco Woods Campground with the stars so bright they didn’t seem real. It’s a place where time slows down, where you realize that the best days are the ones you spend with sand in your shoes and salt on your skin.

What’s remarkable about North Carolina is that you can thread a Harley ride from mountaintop to coastline without ever feeling like you’re crossing into unfamiliar territory. The roads here are made for riders, the curves and views both forgiving and thrilling. And whether you’re setting up a tent or pulling in with your RV, you’ll find campgrounds that welcome you like an old friend, many just minutes from downtowns brimming with life.

If you’re wondering when to go, spring and fall are the sweet spots — when the dogwoods bloom or the leaves set the hills on fire with color. And when it comes to food, well, you can follow your nose. Whether it’s Lexington-style barbecue in the Piedmont or fresh oysters on the coast, you’ll eat well here — I promise you that.

Conclusion

North Carolina is more than a destination on a map — it’s a place that lives in your bones, a patchwork of memories old and new. From the winding roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the breezy stretches of the Outer Banks, from bustling city streets to sleepy mountain towns, this state wraps you in its arms and reminds you what it means to come home.

We may not live there now, but every visit is a homecoming. And who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll trade “visiting” for “returning.” Until then, we’ll keep the Harley tuned, the camper ready, and our hearts open to every mile North Carolina has yet to offer.
